For Adults

Intensive Treatment Clinics For Adults & Older Teens

Since 1994, our fluency treatment clinics have taken a long-term approach to supporting adults and older teens (15+) who want to learn techniques for controlling their speech. Our program was originally developed by now-retired speech language pathologist (SLP) Joe Newsted and by the award-winning* SLP Wendy Duke who is the owner and director of the clinic. Wendy is capably assisted by SLP Jayme Carvey, who is the very popular lead clinician in the program.

Clients spend about 100 hours working on fluency and communication skills during the intensive program - but it doesn't end there. Controlling speech takes daily practice, and our speech-language team follows up with clients to bolster their progress after the clinic ends. Clients meet with a therapist six months and one year later, with annual phone follow-ups for five years (for free) and additional refresher opportunities throughout the year (for a fee).

During the intensive sessions, clients practice and develop their skills by going on group outings and bringing friends and family to class for special activities. Scheduled for maximum use of evenings and weekends, the program requires only one week away from work or school.

Schedule - 2020 Summer Program

Our annual treatment clinic will begin Friday July 31 at 5:30pm; the first phase will run for 9.5 consecutive days, including weekends, from 9:00am to 5:00pm, ending on August 9. The second phase, or "completer weekend" is also a mandatory part of the clinic and takes place from August 21 to 23, 2020.

Fee: $5200 total, which breaks down into:

$200.00 screening fee, payable at time of appointment (non-refundable)

$1100.00 deposit, payable at time of registration (non-refundable)

$3900.00 balance, payable by June 5, 2020. This balance is refundable if cancellation is received in writing by June 25, 2020.

Included in the clinic fee:

  • Screening Assessment
  • Treatment clinic
  • Completer weekend
  • Progress summary report
  • Individual follow up sessions at 6 and 12 months
  • Follow-up telephone calls at 2, 3, 4, 5 years post-clinic

Group refresher clinics and extra follow-up for individuals are available for additional fees. Graduates of the stuttering program may repeat the intensive session for a reduced fee.

B.C. residents 19 or older may be eligible for full funding on a "first come first served" basis.  Criteria for this funding is not based on your financial situation. Please visit the Fred Gingell Memorial Treatment Program page for more funding information.

* Wendy Duke is the 2013 recipient of the "Honours of the Association" award from the British Columbia Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists, based on her career-long contributions to the field of speech pathology in BC.  Says Duke, "To receive this honour from my own peers is the highest possible compliment and I am truly and deeply humbled by this amazing recognition. The results of the adult intensive fluency program remain, even after all of these years, inspiring and gratifying to me.  I am so glad that the next generation of young therapists, such as Jayme Carvey, is continuing the tradition of providing excellent treatment at Columbia Speech and Language Services Inc. to people who stutter."
